A Penny

Found lying on the street,
Lost its shine from the abuse,
I picked up a copper penny,
Something not hard to lose.

It’s absence never noted,
But when found,
Glee fills the heart,
From the glimmer on the ground.

I flipped it in my hand,
Clutched it so tight,
Holding it close to me,
I, too, was filled with delight.

Why is it so,
That when we lose it,
We seem oblivious,
It’s gone in a split.

But when those who need it,
Those who struggle,
Ask for a donation,
We only shun them with a chuckle?
